Omega-3 fatty acids are a vital part of all the cells in our body. They are important for our health and essential parts of different bodily processes. 
 
There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids – ALA, EPA, and DHA. 
<ul><li>ALA (alpha linoleic acid) comes from plant sources including flaxseeds, walnuts, chia seeds, rapeseed oil, hemp, and soy. </li><li>EPA and DHA can come from either animal or plant sources including oily fish, krill, algae, seaweed, shellfish, egg yolks, and some dairy products. </li></ul>
 
While all three are important to our health, and essential nutrients to include in our diet, EPA and DHA provide the most direct health benefits (Oregon State University, 2021). 
<bold>• Higher intakes of omega-3 fatty acids show beneficial effects on heart health and its function (Djuricic &amp; Calder, 2021). 
<ul><li>DHA is the most abundant omega-3 in your brain and plays a critical role in its function. (Schaefer et al., 2006). </li><li>The retina of the eye contains high concentrations of DHA, important for vision and other functions within the eye (Giannaccare et al., 2019). </li><li>Omega-3s are beneficial for skin heath as they help fight inflammation and have been shown to improve the skin’s lipid barrier (McCusker &amp; Grant-Kels, 2010).</bold> </li></ul>
